Mary Winifred Bushakra Collection, 1938-1972
Mary Winifred Bushakra (1888–1978) was an American educator and writer who lived in Lebanon, authored I Married an Arab, and served as Head Resident for women students at the American University of Beirut (1959–1967). Her collection, including correspondence with Emilie Goodale, a teacher in Newark, written between 1938 and 1972, provides vivid insights into her life in Lebanon, the social customs of the Druze community, and the role of foreign women in education and cross-cultural exchange. This collection is particularly relevant for exploring the experiences of expatriate educators, understanding cultural interactions in Lebanon, and highlighting women’s contributions to education and social life in the region.
