تقيم دائرة الأرشيف والمجموعات الخاصة هذا المعرض في "رحاب مكتبة عيسى إسكندر المعلوف"، احتفاءً بالإرث الفكري والثقافي الغني الذي خلّفه أحد رواد النهضة الفكرية في العالم العربي، المؤرخ والأديب والموسوعي اللبناني عيسى إسكندر المعلوف  (1869–1956).

يضم المعرض مختارات من مكتبة المعلوف الخاصة، التي تحتوي على مئات الكتب النادرة بالعربية واللغات الأجنبية، إلى جانب مخطوطات تاريخية التي حرص على جمعها ومراجعتها، ومسودات مؤلفاته، ومراسلاته مع أعلام عصره من أدباء و مفكرين وصحافيين ومؤرخين ومستشرقين. كما يسلّط الضوء على إسهاماته في الجمعيات الأدبية والعلمية، وعلى دوره في إغناء الصحافة من خلال جريدته "الآثار" ومقالاته التي نشرها في مختلف الصحف والمجلات العربية ومن خلال مساهماته في مجامع اللغة العربية في بيروت والقاهرة ودمشق. كذلك حوت مجموعة المعلوف الكثير من المطبوعات والدوريات العربية التي وثقت الحركة الثقافية والأدبية في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين.

ويسلط المعرض الضوء على وثائق استخدمها في أبحاثه، إضافة إلى مقالاته المنشورة أو المحضرة للنشر، وصور فوتوغرافية عائلية وشخصية بالإضافة الى صور معاصريه التي توثّق ملامح من سيرته ومسيرته المهنية وتكشف عن اتساع اهتمامات المعلوف بالتاريخ والأنساب، إلى علم الآثار، واللغة، والموسيقى، والطب الخ مما يجعل المعرض فرصة نادرة لاستكشاف عالمه المتشعب والغني.

إن هذا المعرض ليس فقط تكريماً لعيسى إسكندر المعلوف، بل هو أيضاً دعوة لاستذكار الإرث المعرفي الذي تركه، وإعادة قراءة مشروعه الثقافي في ضوء الحاضر، وتعزيز الوعي بأهمية صون الذاكرة الفكرية العربية.

In the Realm of Issa Iskandar al-Maalouf’s Library Exhibition Introduction

The Archives and Special Collections Department presents this exhibition, In the Realm of Issa Iskandar al-Maaloof’s Library, in celebration of the rich intellectual and cultural legacy of one of the pioneers of the Arab Nahda (renaissance), the Lebanese historian, writer, and encyclopedist Issa Iskandar al-Maaloof (1869–1956).

The exhibition showcases selections from al-Maaloof’s personal library, which includes hundreds of rare books in Arabic and foreign languages, historical manuscripts that he carefully collected and reviewed, drafts of his writings, and correspondence with prominent intellectuals, writers, journalists, historians, and orientalists of his time. It also highlights his contributions to literary and scholarly societies and his role in enriching the Arab press through his newspaper Al-Athar, his articles in various Arabic periodicals, and his involvement in the Arabic language academies of Beirut, Cairo, and Damascus. His collection also contains numerous Arabic publications and journals that document the cultural and literary movements of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The exhibition further presents documents used in his research, published and unpublished articles, personal and family photographs, as well as portraits of his contemporaries, offering glimpses into his personal and professional life. These materials reflect the breadth of al-Maalouf’s interests—from history and genealogy to archaeology, linguistics, music, and medicine—making this exhibition a rare opportunity to explore his multifaceted and rich intellectual world.

This exhibition is not only a tribute to Issa Iskandar al-Maalouf, but also an invitation to reflect on the intellectual legacy he left behind, to revisit his cultural project in the light of the present, and to reaffirm the importance of preserving the Arab world’s intellectual memory.
