Ihsan Abbas (1920–2003) was a Palestinian literary critic, editor, and historian. In 1961, he joined the American University of Beirut, where he taught for 25 years. His academic contributions earned him invitations to numerous scholarly conferences, particularly orientalist gatherings in major Western capitals, as well as lecture opportunities at European and American universities. Abbas educated generations of students and researchers in Sudan, Lebanon, Jordan, and beyond. Renowned for his meticulous verification of heritage texts, he edited 52 classical works, translated or co-translated twelve books into English, and published extensively in specialized academic journals. His critical and scholarly work encompassed both classical and modern Arabic literature, as well as Western literary traditions. The collection is important for researchers in Arabic literature and the development of education at the American University of Beirut.
إحسان عباس (1920–2003) كان ناقدًا أدبيًا فلسطينيًا، ومحررًا، ومؤرخًا. في عام 1961، انضم إلى الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، حيث درّس لمدة 25 عامًا. منحته مساهماته الأكاديمية دعوات للمشاركة في العديد من المؤتمرات العلمية، خاصةً المؤتمرات الاستشراقية في العواصم الغربية الكبرى، فضلاً عن فرص لإلقاء محاضرات في الجامعات الأوروبية والأمريكية. قام عباس بتعليم أجيال من الطلاب والباحثين في السودان ولبنان والأردن وغيرها. اشتهر بتدقيقه المميز للنصوص التراثية، حيث قام بتحقيق 52 عملًا كلاسيكيًا، وترجم أو شارك في ترجمة اثني عشر كتابًا إلى اللغة الإنجليزية، ونشر العديد من المقالات في الدوريات الأكاديمية المتخصصة. كان عمله النقدي والعلمي يشمل الأدب العربي القديم والحديث، بالإضافة إلى الأدب الغربي. هذه المجموعة مهمة للباحثين في الأدب العربي الكلاسيكي والحديث وتطور التعليم في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت.
