Anis K. Makdisi, (1880-1977) a distinguished scholar of Arabic literature, significantly transformed the Arabic Department at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, and a graduate of the Syrian Protestant College (SPC), he joined AUB’s Arabic Department in 1920. Rising to full professor, he chaired the department for over 20 years (1929–1950), driving its modernization and development. Makdisi was an elected member of the Arabic Language Academies in Damascus and Cairo, a prolific author of influential works on Arabic literature, and an accomplished poet. He was also the first to hold the Margaret Weyerhaeuser Jewett Chair of Arabic, established in 1929. In recognition of his legacy, AUB launched the Anis Makdisi Program in Literature in 2002, fostering academic and cultural initiatives in his honor. The collection is important for researchers in Arabic literature, the history of the region, and the development of education at the American University of Beirut.
أنيس الخوري المقدسي (1880-1977)، عالم بارز في الأدب العربي، أحدث تحولًا كبيرًا في قسم اللغة العربية بالجامعة الأميركية في بيروت. وُلد في طرابلس، لبنان، وتخرج من الكلية السورية البروتستانتية. انضم إلى قسم اللغة العربية في الجامعة عام 1920، وترقى ليصبح أستاذًا كاملًا ورئيسًا للقسم لأكثر من 20 عامًا (1929–1950)، حيث قاد عملية تحديثه وتطويره .كان المقدسي عضوًا منتخبًا في مجامع اللغة العربية في دمشق والقاهرة، ومؤلفًا غزير الإنتاج لكتب ومقالات مؤثرة في الأدب العربي، بالإضافة إلى كونه شاعرًا متميزًا. كما كان أول من شغل كرسي مارغريت وايرهوزر جوويت للأدب العربي، الذي تأسست عام 1929. وتكريمًا لإرثه، أطلقت الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت في عام 2002 برنامج أنيس المقدسي للآداب بإسمه، لتعزيز المبادرات الأكاديمية والثقافية. هذه المجموعة مهمة للباحثين في الأدب العربي وتاريخ المنطقة، وتطور التعليم في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت.
