AUB and Latin America: Early Ties and Exchanges
The relationship between the American University of Beirut, Syrian Protestant College then, and Latin America dates back to the late nineteenth century, when Dom Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, visited the University in 1876. His presence on campus marked one of the earliest encounters between AUB and Latin America, symbolizing the global reach of the young institution and its growing reputation beyond the Middle East.
In the years that followed, AUB graduates began to make their way to various Latin American countries, where they played important roles in medicine, education, commerce, and community leadership. These early alumni became cultural ambassadors, carrying with them the values and knowledge acquired at AUB and applying them in their host societies. Their achievements not only strengthened the University’s image abroad but also laid the foundation for enduring connections between AUB and the diverse communities of Latin America.
