Portrait of Daniel Bliss ca. 1910

In 1914, Harvey Porter, reflecting on his forty-three years of service, wrote:

“As I look back upon my years in Syria and contemplate the progress of the College, I am filled with wonder at what I have witnessed. In those early days, the country was not yet awake to the need for higher education, and we struggled on with limited means and few students. Yet, over time, the tide began to turn, and the growing desire for learning placed ever-greater demands upon us.”

Similarly, Daniel Bliss, years after founding the University, wrote:

“We were not anxious to appear great, but we were anxious to lay foundations upon which greatness could be built.”
