Dr. Graham’s Stop

Electric Tramway on Bliss Street, ca. 1930

In Beirut, Dr. Graham quickly became a beloved and trusted figure. One popular story tells that he once paid a tramway driver to loudly announce that the stop near his clinic was “Dr. Graham’s stop.” What began as a playful idea turned into a clever marketing trick. Each time the tram passed, passengers would hear his name echo through the streets—an early and effective form of advertising. The name caught on, and for a long time afterwards, the intersection near his home and clinic was known as Mahattet Graham (“Graham Stop”)—a reminder of both his skills and his creativity.
