Syria (1906) سورية
A “scientific, literal, reformative” review to be issued at “intervals as short as possible”. The second issue of the first volume was issued in February 6th, 1906. The founder was Amin Butrus Hilal, and the editor Wadih el Bustani. The review is bilingual (Arabic and English). It is noteworthy to mention that for the first time in the history of the AUB student magazines, the option of a yearly subscription is offered, hinting at a sense of continuity, stability and commitment to the project that the editors and participating students must have felt. The library holds only two issues (Feb. and Mar. 1906), which are interestingly of different formats. -
Thamarat al Azhan (1899) ثمرات للاذهان
This bi-weeky “scientific, comic” handwritten publication was started by Musa Zakharia in 1899. The library holds 12 issues, which feature poems, scientific articles, but also puzzles and jokes. -
The Anchor (1922)
A bilingual (Arabic and English) magazine, covering economic and financial matters, it was issued by the students of the Department of Business and Commerce. Afif Beyhom and Amin Nuzhet worked as illustartors of the magazine, and Karam Karam as its editor, among others. As is shown below, the English section of the magazine was typed, whereas the Arabic section was handwritten. -
The Business Man (1911)
In addition to its chief editor, Rufa'il Duweik , B.C. 1913, the magazine’s other editors included: A. Faris, Zaki Haykal B.C. 1913 , Daud Sununu B.C. 1913. The library owns four issues from the year 1911. The self-stated mission of the paper is to “bring before the readers as many of the student activities as possible; in addition to that to devote a great deal of each number to a series of commercial articles ..”. It discusses economics and politics in the Middle East, and also covers international events. -
The Commercial S.P.C. Editor (1906)
A monthly “commercial, literary” magazine edited by Selim Haddad, B.C. 1907, Moses Saal, B.C. 1907, Halim Kuzma, and Nejib Yakub and illustrated by Dikran Ilvanian. This type-written magazine covers issues and questions related to commerce and business; it also features articles describing campus life, and offering students’ views on morals, student life, etc. This is one of the earliest student publications in our collection which was fully aware of the importance of graphics, design and illustrations for the look of the paper, and had an artist as well as a cartoonist among its regular staff. -
The Kodak 1904
The Kodak discusses AUB social life as well as social and political events in Greater Syria, and as such, constitutes one of the early examples of reporter photo journalism. Some of the most noteworthy events covered in the three issues of The Kodak that were handed down to the Libraries are the celebration of the anniversary of the coronation of the Ottoman Sultan in BeitEddine (summer 1903), the fire of the Petroleum Store House in Beirut (January 1904). -
The Life of Service (1907)
A monthly handwritten magazine, edited by L. Levonian, G. Daghlian , E. Nasir, H. Kalartinian, Charalambos Damianides Ph.M. 1911. The magazine focuses on theological questions, and the meaning of Christian life for students. The library holds six issues among its collections. Its cover design is very simple, almost austere, and the inside pages do not include any illustrations. -
The Light (1906)
A monthly review edited by Mohamad Abdul Jabbar El-Khairi and illustrated by Hrand Utidjian. The first issue appeared in January 1906, and the library holds 8 issues. The May 1906 volume, displayed here, covers SPC’s Field Day (May 1906), and contains many photographs showcasing the games and the teams.
