المسيرة نحو الإبداع في الموسيقى لدى زكي ناصيف

بمناسبة مرور مائة عام على ولادة الفنان المبدع زكي ناصيف وإحتفالات الجامعة في عيدها المائة والخمسين، قامت مكتبة يافث التذكارية في العام 2016 بتكريم زكي ناصيف بإعداد معرض لمسيرته الفنية والابداعية بعنوان "مسيرة الإبداع في الموسيقى لدى زكي ناصيف"، نظراً لعمق انتمائه إلى الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، وهي المنهل الذي استقى منه معارفه الموسيقية على أيدي أساتذته في المعهد الموسيقي للجامعة. وكانت عائلة زكي ناصيف متمثلة بالدكتور نبيل ناصيف رئيس برنامج الموسيقى في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، قد أهدت أوراقه ونوتاته الموسيقية في العام 2008 إلى مكتبة يافث التي تسعى إلى مساعدة الباحثين عبر إتاحة هذه الأوراق من أجل تطوير البحوث في مجال الموسيقى الشرقية

AUB's Main Gate

The AUB Main Gate , built in 1902, first known as Gate House, is a building designed by a world-renowned architect, Edward Pearce Casey (1864–1940), who was responsible for the design of the Library of Congress Jefferson Building. The exhibit proposes to look at the history, planning, and initial function of the Main Gate building, the architect behind it, its evolution over time, and its impact on and integration into the life of AUB along several axes: security, community, possibility, struggle and hope.

Comics: A Very Serious Matter!

Comics is currently considered, by many academics, a rich subject of research, worthy of studying across disciplines, and from a variety of perspectives. Advocates of the ninth art, both within and outside academia, believe that because comics shed light on many questions, concepts, ideas, historical periods, social and economic issues, and power relations, they are specially fit to support liberal arts curricula. In this exhibit, we focus on some questions relating to the perspective of Arab comics, digging into the wealth of material offered to us through our growing AUB University Library Comics collection.

The Syrian Protestant College and the Great War (1914-18)

One of the most savage wars witnessed by humanity, the Great War, would ensue in 1914 raging for four years across several continents and would eventually annihilate millions of casualties. In this exhibit we try to display archival material that retrace this trajectory, showcasing photos, letters, reports, diaries, etc., which bear witness to the tragedies that occurred in Syria, to the hardships the College faced, to the flexibility, engagement, and vision of the College community, and to the influential role that the university was destined to play in the region.

AUB Student Magazines 1899-1934

The Archives Department hold over 70 student publications. This exhibit focuses on magazines published between 1899 and 1939, many of which were handwritten. The periodicals were mainly published in Arabic, English, and French and vary in subjects, layout, length of run, but in all cases, they offer a first-hand narrative of the students’ concerns, activities, interests, opinions, and outlooks in the first half of the twentieth century. These magazines are an exceptional source of information on students’ life at SPC/ AUB, testifying to the richness of the liberal arts education at the University.

Dar al-Fata al-Arabi

Founded in Beirut in 1974, Dar al-Fata, an influential publisher of children’s books in the Arab world, succeeded in engaging prominent litterateurs to craft original Arabic texts with leading artists to forge a new aesthetic and render scientific, historical, and cultural content. This content discussed the Palestinian Question, solidarity among the Global South, along with the social and political issues of the time. The material showcased here gives a glimpse of the rich designs and content of the publications of Dar al-Fata and highlights the work of a leading illustrator, Mohiddeen al-Labbad.
